Hyderabad Power Expo Highlights Smarter Grid Expansion
Hyderabad, August 21: Hyderabad’s power infrastructure is set for a public showcase as Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited plans a three-day exhibition from August 22 to 24 at People Plaza. Beyond displaying equipment and consumer services, the event will highlight proposed underground cabling and compact substations that could reshape how electricity infrastructure is integrated into the city’s increasingly dense urban landscape.
The exhibition will cover a broad range of electricity-related systems, including metering, billing, earthing, solar installations, underground cables, renewable-energy infrastructure and electric-vehicle charging facilities. Demonstration models will allow visitors to understand how power reaches homes and businesses and how electricity networks are monitored and maintained. A major focus will be the planned conversion of selected overhead power lines to underground cables in the CURE area. Moving distribution infrastructure below ground can reduce the visual and physical conflicts created by overhead networks, while also improving the resilience of electricity corridors against storms, vehicle-related damage and other disruptions. The distribution utility is also preparing 33/11 kV hybrid indoor substations in spaces beneath flyovers where engineering conditions permit. The proposed installations would use switchgear and remote terminal unit integration to allow operations with limited on-site staffing. Five locations have been proposed for the compact substations: the Shaikpet flyover near pillars 6 and 7, Nayani Narsimha Reddy Steel Bridge near VST, the Gachibowli-Kondapur flyover and two points around the Kothaguda flyover.
The proposals are significant for Hyderabad because conventional substations require substantial land, which is increasingly difficult to secure in established neighbourhoods. Using under-flyover spaces could offer an alternative approach, provided safety, accessibility, maintenance and emergency-response requirements are fully addressed. For residents, the larger issue is reliability. Hyderabad’s rapid commercial and residential growth is increasing pressure on the electricity network, making efficient distribution infrastructure essential for both households and economic activity. Underground systems and remotely monitored substations could help utilities manage dense urban corridors more effectively, although their long-term benefits will depend on construction quality and maintenance. The exhibition will also include consumer-focused displays covering the 1912 control room, safety practices, disaster management and service initiatives. School groups are expected to visit the event, while hourly quizzes and laser shows are planned during the exhibition.
The three-day event offers an opportunity for citizens to understand the infrastructure behind everyday electricity consumption. For a growing city, greater public awareness alongside carefully planned grid modernisation can help connect energy reliability with safer, more resilient and better-integrated urban development.
