Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is modernising maintenance operations along the city’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) by introducing mechanised landscaping equipment and planning an automated irrigation network. The move is intended to improve worker safety, enhance operational efficiency and support the long-term sustainability of one of Hyderabad’s most important transport corridors.
The new Hyderabad ORR maintenance strategy includes the deployment of specialised hedge-trimming machines capable of covering several kilometres of roadside greenery in a single day. By replacing labour-intensive manual operations, the authority aims to reduce the amount of time maintenance crews spend on the high-speed expressway, where routine landscaping activities have previously exposed workers to safety risks. Officials are also preparing to introduce an automated sprinkler and drip irrigation system for roadside plantations. The proposed network is expected to replace conventional water tanker operations, allowing vegetation to be irrigated more efficiently while reducing vehicle movement along the expressway. The shift towards mechanised and automated maintenance follows concerns over accidents involving maintenance personnel working on the ORR.
