Hyderabad is reassessing its long-term urban mobility strategy as rising traffic and population growth put greater pressure on the city’s transport network. The latest review by the Hyderabad Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (HUMTA) places road safety, public transport integration and first- and last-mile connectivity at the centre of future planning.
The approach signals a shift from developing individual transport projects towards creating a more connected system. For commuters, the success of that model will depend on how easily people can move between buses, Metro services, MMTS and walking or cycling routes. Road safety has emerged as a key priority in the mobility review. Better junction design, safer pedestrian facilities and improved walking and cycling infrastructure are being considered as part of a wider effort to make daily travel less dependent on private vehicles. This is particularly important as Hyderabad continues to expand outward. New residential developments, commercial districts and employment centres are increasing travel distances across the metropolitan region. If public transport does not keep pace with this growth, more commuters could turn to private vehicles, adding pressure to already congested corridors. First- and last-mile connectivity is therefore becoming a critical part of the city’s transport planning. A Metro station or bus corridor can only serve commuters effectively if people can safely reach it from their homes, workplaces and neighbourhoods.
The review also highlights the need for stronger coordination between agencies responsible for roads, public transport and urban infrastructure. Separate planning can result in transport projects that work individually but fail to connect efficiently. Better institutional coordination could help align road improvements, transit infrastructure, pedestrian spaces and traffic management. HUMTA has been using dedicated working groups to address areas including mobility policy, road infrastructure, public spaces and intelligent traffic management. Such coordination could become increasingly important as Hyderabad expands its transport network and introduces more technology into traffic operations. The city’s mobility transition also has an economic dimension. Reliable public transport can improve access to jobs, education and services, particularly for people who do not own private vehicles. Better pedestrian connections can also strengthen local commercial areas by making neighbourhoods easier to access without a car.
At the same time, transport planning will need to account for Hyderabad’s environmental pressures. Reducing unnecessary dependence on private vehicles can help limit congestion, fuel consumption and transport-related emissions. Safer walking and cycling infrastructure can further support healthier and more liveable neighbourhoods. Hyderabad is already pursuing investments across Metro expansion, suburban rail, roads and mobility hubs. The challenge now is ensuring that these projects function as parts of one network rather than isolated assets. The success of the Hyderabad mobility plan will ultimately be measured by everyday experience: safer crossings, shorter transfers, reliable public transport and easier access to the first and last kilometre of every journey. As the city grows, integrating these elements could be critical to building a more efficient and resilient urban transport system.
