Hyderabad is preparing a comprehensive upgrade of its Multi Modal Transport System (MMTS), with plans to transform all 51 stations into integrated transit hubs that offer smoother connections between trains, Metro services, buses and other modes of transport. The initiative marks a significant step towards building a more connected public transport network while improving accessibility for commuters across the metropolitan region.
The proposed programme will be implemented through the Hyderabad Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (HUMTA), which is developing station-specific integration plans aimed at strengthening first- and last-mile connectivity. Authorities intend to appoint consultants to prepare Detailed Project Reports and station area development plans before the implementation phase begins. The Hyderabad MMTS project extends beyond upgrading station buildings. It seeks to redesign surrounding public spaces so that passengers can move easily between suburban rail services, Metro Rail, city buses, auto-rickshaws and other transport options. Improved pedestrian infrastructure, organised feeder services, cycling facilities and better parking arrangements are expected to form key components of the redevelopment strategy. Urban mobility experts have long identified poor first- and last-mile connectivity as one of the primary reasons for lower public transport usage. Many commuters face challenges such as inadequate footpaths, distant bus stops, limited parking and the absence of reliable feeder services, reducing the convenience of rail-based travel despite existing infrastructure.
Transport planners believe integrated transit hubs can significantly improve passenger experience by reducing travel time between different transport modes. Well-designed interchanges also encourage greater use of public transport, helping reduce dependence on private vehicles while easing road congestion and lowering urban emissions. The Hyderabad MMTS modernisation programme also aligns with broader efforts to develop a multimodal transport system capable of supporting the city’s expanding population. Better integration between rail, Metro and bus services can improve mobility for workers, students and daily commuters while enhancing access to commercial districts and residential neighbourhoods.
