Hyderabad Lake Rejuvenation Gets International Cooperation Push

Hyderabad’s lake rejuvenation efforts received an international cooperation boost after Bordeaux Métropole and the Telangana government signed a memorandum of understanding on lake restoration and water resource conservation at a workshop in the city on Monday.

The MoU was signed during a one-day workshop organised by Bordeaux Métropole and the Administrative Staff College of India at Bella Vista. The workshop was inaugurated by Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary, Metropolitan Administration and Urban Development.

Discussions focused on improving coordination among the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, the Commissionerate and municipal corporations involved in managing water bodies across the metropolitan area. The stated objective was to protect, conserve and rejuvenate lakes and other water resources through coordinated action by urban agencies.

The workshop brought together representatives from government departments, urban local bodies, experts, environmental organisations and the public. Participants discussed international practices in lake management, technological advances and innovative solutions that could be adapted to local requirements.

The emphasis on inter-agency coordination reflects the administrative complexity of managing urban lakes. Water bodies in a metropolitan area are affected by decisions taken by multiple civic and utility agencies, making cooperation between institutions a central part of conservation efforts. The workshop placed this coordination alongside technical solutions and public participation as part of a sustainable water-management approach.

The discussions also included measures to preserve clean water resources within the jurisdiction of Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation. The event called for coordinated action to protect water bodies and conserve resources for future generations, although the report did not specify individual lake projects, funding commitments, implementation deadlines or performance targets under the MoU.

Officials attending the workshop included Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board Managing Director Ashok Reddy and B Janardhan Reddy, Director of Research Studies at the Administrative Staff College of India.

The agreement places lake rejuvenation within a broader framework of metropolitan water-resource conservation rather than treating individual lakes as isolated civic projects. Its immediate significance lies in creating a formal platform for cooperation between Telangana’s urban administration and Bordeaux Métropole, while the details of specific interventions and their execution remain to be established.
