Hyderabad: Two major urban infrastructure projects in Hyderabad are approaching completion and are expected to become operational next month, offering improved connectivity across key transport corridors. The projects—a new bridge across the Musi River and an elevated corridor linking Nalgonda Crossroads with Owaisi Hospital Junction—are expected to reduce congestion, improve travel reliability and strengthen mobility in rapidly growing parts of the city.
The Hyderabad infrastructure projects represent significant investments in the city’s transport network, addressing long-standing connectivity challenges while supporting safer and more resilient urban mobility. Officials indicate that one carriageway of the new high-level bridge at Moosarambagh is in its final stages and could be opened to traffic first, allowing vehicle movement to resume while construction continues on the remaining carriageway. The bridge replaces an ageing causeway that was dismantled after structural assessments identified safety concerns following years of exposure to repeated flooding in the Musi River. The new crossing forms part of a broader programme to modernise river connectivity and improve transport resilience in flood-prone areas. Construction is also progressing on another bridge downstream connecting Amberpet and Malakpet, with work reported to be nearing completion. Together, these crossings are expected to enhance east-west connectivity and improve traffic circulation across densely populated neighbourhoods divided by the river.
Meanwhile, the elevated corridor between Nalgonda Crossroads and Owaisi Hospital Junction has entered its final phase. The 2.58-kilometre structure is designed to ease congestion on one of Hyderabad’s busiest arterial routes by separating through traffic from local vehicle movement. The project, implemented with a revised investment that includes land acquisition costs, has experienced delays during construction but is now approaching completion. Urban planners note that these Hyderabad infrastructure projects could deliver broader economic and social benefits by reducing travel times, improving access to healthcare, commercial centres and residential areas, and increasing the efficiency of public transport corridors. Better connectivity can also support economic activity by lowering logistics delays and improving access to employment hubs.
However, experts emphasise that new road infrastructure should be integrated with pedestrian facilities, public transport access and climate-resilient urban planning. River crossings, in particular, require careful consideration of flood management, drainage systems and environmental sustainability to ensure long-term performance under changing weather conditions. As Hyderabad continues to expand, timely completion of strategic transport projects remains critical to supporting population growth and economic development.
