Hyderabad Ganesh immersion at Hussain Sagar concluded around 2 pm on Saturday, after a morning surge that saw between 500 and 800 idols move through the city’s main roads for immersion. With the festival operation ending, civic agencies began clearing waste from procession routes and the lake.
The final vehicles carrying idols were seen at the Hussain Sagar shore on Saturday afternoon. Hundreds of large idols that had accumulated overnight from Friday into Saturday morning stood in queues along key central corridors before being taken to the water body.
According to official estimates cited in the report, around 1.2 lakh Ganesh idols were immersed across Hyderabad over the two days. The volume of movement created a major short-term demand on road management, traffic diversions, immersion points and sanitation services across the city.
The Saturday morning rush was concentrated between 6 am and 2 pm, when an estimated 500 to 800 idols were cleared from the main roads and immersed. Barricades placed along roads leading to water bodies were removed in the afternoon to allow vehicular traffic to resume.
The end of immersion shifted the operational focus from crowd and traffic management to waste removal. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation sanitation teams were deployed along the main procession routes, supported by mechanical sweeping units. The cleanup includes festival debris such as garlands, puja material, decorative items, coloured paper and broken coconuts.
At Hussain Sagar, the waste load was visible on the lake surface after the immersion activity. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority deployed floating trash collectors and an amphibious excavator to remove the material from the water.
The response places two different civic responsibilities alongside each other. GHMC teams are handling the roads and public spaces used by processions, while HMDA is undertaking mechanical removal within the lake. The division reflects the scale of managing a city-wide festival that affects transport corridors, sanitation operations and an important urban water body at the same time.
The immediate next steps are the continued clearing of festival debris from the main routes and the removal of floating waste from Hussain Sagar using the equipment deployed by HMDA. Traffic restrictions and barricades on roads leading to immersion points are also being taken down as the operation concludes.
