Hyderabad: One of Hyderabad’s longest-awaited transport projects is set to become operational, with the Telangana government preparing to open the Nalgonda X Roads steel flyover after completion of construction works. The infrastructure project is expected to significantly improve traffic movement across one of the city’s busiest transport corridors while strengthening connectivity between central and eastern Hyderabad.
State ministers who inspected the project on Wednesday confirmed that the flyover has reached the final stage, with finishing activities such as road markings, signage and painting currently underway. The remaining side ramp works are also nearing completion ahead of the formal inauguration. Built at an estimated cost of ₹680 crore, the elevated corridor stretches approximately 3.3 kilometres and has been designed as a signal-free route linking Nalgonda X Roads with the Owaisi Hospital Junction. Transport planners expect the project to substantially reduce travel delays on a corridor that regularly experiences heavy congestion during peak hours. According to officials, commuters travelling along this stretch could see journey times reduce from around 35 minutes to nearly five minutes once the flyover becomes fully operational. The project forms part of Hyderabad’s broader strategy to improve road efficiency through grade separators, elevated corridors and junction upgrades in high-density urban areas.
Alongside the flyover inspection, government representatives also reviewed progress on the Moosarambagh high-level bridge across the Musi River. While the bridge structure has been completed, work continues on approach roads connecting both sides of the river. Authorities have instructed engineers to accelerate these remaining works and improve access infrastructure before opening the bridge to traffic. Urban mobility experts note that while elevated road projects can ease congestion at critical intersections, their long-term success depends on integrated transport planning. Efficient public transport, pedestrian infrastructure, cycling facilities and well-designed feeder roads remain essential for creating a balanced urban mobility network rather than relying solely on expanded road capacity.
The Hyderabad steel flyover is also expected to improve freight movement, emergency vehicle access and daily commuting efficiency across surrounding neighbourhoods. However, urban planners caution that sustained congestion relief will require continuous investment in multimodal transport systems alongside road infrastructure. With the project now entering its final execution phase, attention will shift towards operational readiness, traffic management and ensuring that surrounding road networks are equipped to maximise the benefits of the new corridor while supporting safer and more sustainable mobility across the city.
