Hyderabad Electric Bus Push Gains National Support
Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s transition towards cleaner public transport received a boost with the launch of a new commercial electric bus and renewed emphasis on expanding electric mobility. The development aligns with the Centre’s broader strategy to strengthen critical mineral supply chains while accelerating the adoption of low-emission transport technologies across Indian cities.
The Hyderabad electric buses initiative gained momentum as a new nine-metre commercial electric bus designed for urban operations was introduced for city transport applications. The vehicle is intended to improve mobility on high-density routes while supporting efforts to reduce emissions and dependence on conventional fossil-fuel-powered transport. During the event, the Union government reiterated its focus on strengthening domestic supplies of critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and copper through the National Critical Mineral Mission. These minerals are considered essential for manufacturing electric vehicles, batteries, semiconductors, renewable energy systems and advanced technology applications. Industry experts note that a resilient critical mineral supply chain will be vital for India’s long-term electric mobility ambitions. Stable access to these resources can reduce import dependence, strengthen domestic manufacturing and support the country’s transition towards cleaner transport solutions.
The Hyderabad electric buses programme is also expected to expand significantly over the coming months. Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) plans to induct 800 electric buses later this year under the PM E-DRIVE initiative, followed by an additional 1,400 buses under the Gross Cost Contract model in the following phase. Urban mobility specialists believe that expanding electric bus fleets can significantly improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower operating costs over time. Electrified public transport also supports more inclusive and efficient mobility by providing reliable alternatives to private vehicle use in rapidly growing cities.
Experts further emphasise that Hyderabad’s growing ecosystem of technology companies, semiconductor design centres and advanced manufacturing capabilities positions the city to play an important role in India’s clean mobility transition. Stronger integration between manufacturing, innovation and sustainable transport policies could create new economic opportunities while supporting climate goals. As Hyderabad continues investing in modern public transport, the expansion of electric buses and supporting infrastructure is expected to contribute to a cleaner, more resilient and future-ready urban mobility network that aligns with national sustainability objectives.
