Hyderabad Declaration Pushes Green Logistics Mission
HYDERABAD: A new policy framework unveiled in Hyderabad is seeking to reshape India’s freight and logistics landscape by proposing a nationwide mission focused on low-carbon transport, clean energy and resilient supply chains. Known as the Hyderabad Declaration, the initiative outlines a roadmap for integrating sustainable logistics with industrial development, positioning green infrastructure as a key driver of future economic competitiveness.
Launched during the International Conference on Green Technology, Policy and Finance, the declaration has been prepared as a policy proposal for consideration by national decision-makers. It recommends the establishment of a National Green Logistics and Sustainable Supply Chain Mission to coordinate investments in clean freight systems, renewable energy integration and digital logistics infrastructure. The Hyderabad Declaration brings together multiple elements of sustainable logistics, including green hydrogen, multimodal freight transport, artificial intelligence-enabled logistics platforms, zero-emission ports and industrial corridors. Urban infrastructure experts note that combining these initiatives under a single policy framework could improve coordination between transport, energy and industrial sectors while supporting India’s long-term decarbonisation objectives. Logistics specialists estimate that improving freight efficiency could significantly reduce the country’s logistics costs, which remain higher than many global benchmarks. Lower transport costs can strengthen manufacturing competitiveness, improve export performance and reduce supply chain inefficiencies while delivering environmental benefits through lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions.
Among the proposals is the development of dedicated green hydrogen freight corridors, expansion of clean energy infrastructure at major ports and the creation of financing mechanisms to support sustainable logistics projects through public-private partnerships. The framework also recommends deploying digital freight management systems capable of monitoring carbon emissions and improving cargo movement across transport networks. Urban planners believe integrated logistics infrastructure will become increasingly important as cities expand and industrial production grows. Efficient multimodal transport systems that connect ports, railways, highways and manufacturing clusters can reduce congestion, optimise freight movement and minimise environmental impacts associated with road-based transport. The declaration also highlights the strategic importance of emerging international trade corridors and the need for India to align its logistics infrastructure with evolving global sustainability standards. As international markets increasingly prioritise low-carbon supply chains, investment in cleaner freight systems could enhance the country’s competitiveness while supporting energy security through greater adoption of renewable fuels.
Experts at the conference emphasised that achieving these ambitions will require coordinated action between the Union government, state governments, industry and research institutions. Policy alignment, regulatory reforms and sustained infrastructure investment will be essential for translating the recommendations into measurable outcomes. If adopted, the Hyderabad Declaration could serve as a foundation for modernising India’s logistics ecosystem through cleaner transport technologies, digital innovation and integrated infrastructure planning. Its long-term significance will depend on effective implementation that balances economic growth with climate resilience, sustainable urban development and efficient national supply chains.
