Hyderabad: Hyderabad Customs is planning to expand the city’s logistics infrastructure by establishing two new Inland Container Depots (ICDs), a move aimed at easing cargo congestion and improving freight movement across one of southern India’s fastest-growing trade hubs. The proposal aligns with broader efforts to strengthen supply chains and support industrial and export-driven growth.
The proposed Hyderabad Inland Container Depots will complement existing customs infrastructure, which includes the Air Cargo Complex, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport cargo facilities, ICD Sanathnagar, ICD Thimmapur and container freight stations. Officials believe the additional facilities will increase cargo-handling capacity while reducing operational bottlenecks. The expansion comes as Hyderabad records strong growth in customs revenue, reflecting rising import and export activity across pharmaceuticals, electronics, engineering goods and other manufacturing sectors. Higher trade volumes have increased pressure on existing logistics infrastructure, prompting the need for additional cargo handling facilities. Industry experts say the Hyderabad Inland Container Depots will improve freight efficiency by enabling faster customs clearance, reducing turnaround time and strengthening multimodal logistics connectivity. Efficient inland cargo infrastructure also helps lower transportation costs and enhances supply chain reliability for businesses operating across the region.
Officials have also discussed the development of product-specific ICDs and Air Freight Stations to support specialised industries with faster cargo processing. Such facilities can improve handling efficiency for high-value and time-sensitive goods while strengthening Hyderabad’s position as a major logistics and export gateway. Urban infrastructure specialists note that logistics infrastructure plays an increasingly important role in sustainable regional development. Strategically located inland depots can reduce congestion at major cargo terminals, optimise freight movement and minimise unnecessary truck trips, contributing to lower transport emissions and improved operational efficiency.
