A section of Hyderabad’s Uppal Skywalk is set to be temporarily dismantled as authorities advance work on a major elevated corridor project, underscoring the complex challenge of integrating new transport infrastructure within already developed urban spaces.
The affected portion of the pedestrian facility will be removed to facilitate the construction of support structures for the upcoming elevated corridor, which is designed to pass above both the Inner Ring Road and the Metro rail corridor near Uppal Junction. The project forms part of broader efforts to improve traffic flow and connectivity in one of the city’s busiest transport hubs. Urban mobility experts note that rapidly growing cities frequently face difficult choices when introducing new infrastructure into areas where roads, public transport systems and pedestrian facilities already coexist within limited space. Retrofitting modern transport projects often requires temporary disruptions to existing assets before long-term benefits can be realised. The Uppal Skywalk, operational since 2023, was developed to improve pedestrian safety and reduce conflicts between vehicle traffic and foot movement around the busy junction. It has served as a key access route for commuters travelling between surrounding neighbourhoods, transit facilities and the Warangal Highway corridor.
However, the alignment of the new elevated road requires construction activity directly beneath a section of the existing structure. As a result, authorities have initiated plans to remove a portion of the skywalk before reconstructing it once corridor works progress. Transport planners highlight that pedestrian infrastructure remains a critical component of sustainable urban mobility. While road and transit expansions often receive greater attention, maintaining safe and accessible walking infrastructure is essential for reducing dependence on private vehicles and improving last-mile connectivity. The temporary closure is expected to affect pedestrian movement in the area for several months. Commuters may need to rely on alternative crossing routes until reconstruction is completed.
