Hyderabad Civic Groups Seek Stronger Ward Committees and Rainwater Measures

Hyderabad resident welfare associations have urged Telangana’s municipal administration to strengthen ward committees, improve rainwater infrastructure and simplify participation in civic governance, placing local decision-making and water management at the centre of a representation submitted to senior officials.

Members of the United Federation of Resident Welfare Associations (UFERWAS) Telangana met Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development, and Special Officer of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, the Metropolitan Municipal Corporation and the City Municipal Corporation. The delegation submitted a representation outlining municipal and urban governance concerns.

A key demand was the strengthening of ward committees under the CURE Act. UFERWAS said stronger ward-level bodies would support grassroots governance and enable greater citizen participation in municipal administration. The representation also called for rainwater harvesting pits and improvements to road infrastructure to support more effective rainwater management.

The demands connect neighbourhood-level civic participation with the physical systems that manage water on Hyderabad’s streets. Rainwater harvesting pits were raised as a specific measure, while better roads were sought as part of broader rainwater management efforts. The delegation also highlighted the need to collect and properly manage excess water from sewage treatment plants serving gated communities.

The group further urged the authorities to simplify registration procedures and reduce registration charges. According to the representation, these changes could encourage wider participation and improve compliance among resident welfare associations and other community organisations.

The delegation included Sitaram Dholipala, V.V. Rao and R.C.V. Badrinath, among others. UFERWAS extended greetings to Ranjan during the meeting and asked the Municipal Administration and Urban Development authorities to examine the issues raised.

The representation places responsibility for further action with the MA&UD authorities. The requested measures cover ward committee functioning, stormwater and rainwater infrastructure, management of treated sewage water and the administrative process for resident participation. No specific implementation timetable or decision on the proposals was stated in the report.
