Hyderabad Bioeconomy Boosts Indigenous Green Manufacturing
Hyderabad: A biotechnology project in Hyderabad has secured central government support to commercialise an indigenous process for producing a natural blue pigment from Spirulina, signalling a broader push towards sustainable manufacturing, import substitution and value-added bio-based products. The initiative highlights the growing role of scientific research and technology transfer in strengthening India’s bioeconomy while promoting environmentally responsible industrial production.
The financial assistance, approved by the Technology Development Board, will support the commercial-scale production of natural blue pigment developed using research originating from an Indian academic institution. The technology has been transferred to a Hyderabad-based biotechnology company to facilitate industrial manufacturing and market deployment. Derived from Spirulina, the naturally occurring pigment is intended for use across multiple sectors, including food processing, nutraceuticals, agriculture, aquaculture and poultry nutrition. Industry experts note that global demand for naturally sourced food ingredients and colourants has increased as manufacturers seek cleaner, plant-based alternatives to synthetic additives. A distinguishing feature of the technology is its environmentally conscious extraction process. Unlike conventional production methods that often depend on chemical solvents, the new approach employs a green extraction technique designed to recover the natural blue pigment without chemical-intensive processing. Specialists say such methods can reduce environmental impact while improving workplace safety and supporting sustainable manufacturing practices.
Researchers also developed cultivation protocols that maintain Spirulina under carefully controlled conditions to optimise pigment production and ensure consistent quality.
