A long-delayed road widening project connecting Bandlaguda Jagir with Kismatpur is set for renewed implementation after the Telangana government moved responsibility for several Greater Hyderabad road projects to Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited. The change is aimed at resolving administrative overlaps and accelerating infrastructure work in a rapidly urbanising part of Rajendranagar.
The Bandlaguda Jagir–Kismatpur corridor forms part of the Hyderabad-Bijapur National Highway network. Under the revised arrangement, the road is expected to be widened to 100 feet, with ₹161 crore allocated for the project. The proposal is not new. Plans to expand roads across Bandlaguda Jagir, Hydershakot and Kismatpur have been pending for several years. Surveys were conducted and funding was sanctioned, but construction did not progress as expected. The transfer of responsibility is intended to create a single implementation structure for urban and radial road projects across Greater Hyderabad. Earlier, responsibilities were divided between different agencies, creating potential coordination problems in project execution.
The need for the upgrade has grown alongside rapid residential development. Numerous apartment complexes and villa communities have emerged across the Bandlaguda Jagir-Kismatpur belt. However, parts of the existing road network remain narrow, with some stretches around 30 feet wide. This mismatch between development and transport infrastructure has contributed to congestion. As more residents move into new housing projects, daily traffic volumes increase on roads that were originally designed for much lower demand. The Bandlaguda Kismatpur road project could therefore have implications beyond reducing vehicle queues. Better road capacity can improve access to residential areas, schools, workplaces and local businesses. It may also support more predictable travel times for emergency and service vehicles.
At the same time, widening an established urban road needs careful planning. Road expansion can affect trees, drainage, pedestrian movement and access to adjoining properties. The quality of implementation will therefore matter as much as the additional road width. Urban planners increasingly stress that road projects should be coordinated with footpaths, drainage and public transport. Simply adding vehicle capacity may offer limited long-term relief if surrounding development continues to increase traffic faster than the network can absorb it. For residents, the immediate expectation is that the administrative change will translate into visible construction activity. Preliminary activity had taken place earlier, including tree removal, but the main widening work remained pending. The Bandlaguda Kismatpur road upgrade now has an opportunity to address a longstanding infrastructure gap. Its success will depend on timely execution, effective traffic management during construction and ensuring that the upgraded corridor works safely for motorists, pedestrians and surrounding communities.
