Hyderabad Airport Wins National Energy Leader Award for Eighth Year

Hyderabad airport operator GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) has received the National Energy Leader Award for the eighth consecutive year at the Confederation of Indian Industry’s 27th National Awards for Excellence in Energy Management 2026, held in Hyderabad from September 16 to 18.

GHIAL was also recognised as an Excellent Energy Efficient Unit for the tenth consecutive year. The awards recognise organisations for progress in energy efficiency, energy management, innovation and sustainable operating practices.

The event attracted participation from more than 700 companies across India, according to the report. GHIAL’s consecutive recognitions place energy management among the airport operator’s stated areas of operational focus, alongside passenger services and the management of a large aviation facility.

The airport has reported using energy-efficiency technologies, energy-conservation measures, renewable energy and operational practices intended to optimise energy consumption and reduce its environmental impact. The supplied announcement does not disclose the airport’s total energy use, the proportion of renewable energy in its power mix, or the amount of emissions reduced through these measures.

Airports are energy-intensive urban infrastructure assets because they operate across terminals, passenger-processing areas, baggage systems, lighting, cooling, security equipment and supporting facilities. For Hyderabad, the airport is also a key regional transport gateway, making the way it manages energy relevant to the wider environmental performance of the city’s mobility infrastructure. The award, however, recognises the operator’s reported systems and progress rather than establishing a city-wide sustainability assessment.

Kadhir Kadhiravan, chief executive officer of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd., said sustainability was integral to the company’s operations. “Our commitment to energy efficiency is driven by the belief that responsible growth and a seamless passenger experience must go hand in hand,” he said.

Kadhiravan added that GHIAL had continued to invest in energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy and smarter operational practices to optimise resource consumption and improve efficiency across the airport.

The CII awards platform describes its recognition as being based on measurable progress, innovation and commitment to energy performance and sustainable practices. The report does not specify the criteria applied to GHIAL, the audited performance indicators considered by the jury, or whether the award includes a comparison with other airports.

The latest recognition therefore confirms the airport operator’s sustained participation in energy-management and efficiency programmes, while detailed public performance figures will be required to assess the scale of the operational gains. GHIAL’s next steps, as described by its chief executive, are continued investment in energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy and operational measures at Hyderabad airport.
