Technip Energies has secured an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) for the Lube Modernization and Bottom Upgradation project at HPCL’s Mumbai refinery, marking a significant upgrade to the facility’s lubricant and heavy-stream processing capabilities.
The contract covers the delivery and integration of a 550 kilo tonnes per annum (KTA) Integrated Hydrocracker and Catalytic Dewaxing (IHCD) unit and an 850 KTA Solvent Deasphalting (SDA) unit. Both units will be installed within the existing operating refinery, according to Technip Energies.
The project is intended to modernise HPCL’s production of lube oil base stocks. These base stocks are key inputs for automotive engine oils and industrial lubricants. The new processing facilities will also enable heavier refinery streams to be converted into higher-value products, improving the utilisation of the refinery’s existing feedstock and processing infrastructure.
Technip Energies said the award forms a major part of HPCL’s Lube Modernization and Bottom Upgradation project. The company did not disclose the contract value or a completion schedule in the announcement.
The IHCD unit combines hydrocracking and catalytic dewaxing processes. In the project’s stated configuration, these facilities are intended to support the production of lubricant base stocks, while the SDA unit will process heavier streams within the refinery system. Their integration into an operating refinery makes coordination between new construction and existing facilities a central part of the EPC work.
Loïc Chapuis, President of Project Delivery and Services at Technip Energies, said the award reflected HPCL’s confidence in the company’s EPC delivery capabilities and built on a relationship between the two companies spanning more than two decades. He said Technip Energies would draw on its experience in refinery modernisation and complex project execution to deliver the units and integrate them with the existing facilities.
HPCL’s Mumbai refinery is therefore being positioned not only as a fuel-processing asset but also as a site for expanding the production of specialty petroleum products. The company said the project would support the refinery’s long-term competitiveness by increasing the value generated from existing refining assets.
The announcement comes as India continues to invest in refinery modernisation to meet domestic demand for fuels and specialty petroleum products. For cities and industrial regions, such projects extend the working life and productive capacity of established industrial infrastructure without requiring the development of an entirely new refinery site.
The next stages will involve engineering, procurement, construction and integration of the IHCD and SDA units within the operating Mumbai refinery. Technip Energies said it would proceed with delivery and integration of the facilities under the awarded contract.
