HMWS&SB Cash Seizure Puts Hyderabad Water Board Under ACB Scrutiny

The Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau seized Rs.2.40 lakh in unaccounted cash from the car of A. Srinivas, joint director of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB), during a surprise check in Hyderabad on Saturday evening.

According to a press release issued by the Telangana ACB on Sunday, its City Range team acted on an anonymous call alleging that a senior HMWS&SB official from the board’s Khairatabad office was carrying illegally collected cash while returning home. The allegation has not been established, and the ACB has taken the cash for further verification.

The team intercepted Srinivas’s Maruti Swift, bearing registration number TS08 GQ 3699, opposite Metro Residency Apartments on Raj Bhavan Road at around 7 pm. During the check, officials found Rs.2.40 lakh inside the vehicle.

The ACB said Srinivas did not provide a satisfactory explanation for the cash and gave inconsistent answers when questioned. Officials seized the money under a panchanama, a formal record of seizure, as they examine whether there was a possible corruption angle.

HMWS&SB is Hyderabad’s principal water and sewerage utility, responsible for services that affect households, businesses and public institutions across the metropolitan region. The seizure therefore places attention on the administrative controls governing field operations, revenue collection and official conduct within a critical civic service. The ACB’s action, however, does not by itself establish that the money was collected through corruption.

The case also illustrates how anti-corruption checks can move from an allegation to a documented seizure while the underlying circumstances remain subject to investigation. The ACB has not disclosed the identity of the caller or provided further details about the alleged collection linked to the cash.

Officials said further action would be taken after verification. The Income Tax Department will also be informed, according to the ACB, while the seized cash and the circumstances surrounding its possession remain under examination.
