Historic Inscription Surfaces Near Huligi Dam

A significant historical inscription from the Vijayanagara dynasty has been discovered near Mudlapura in Koppala taluk, Karnataka.

This remarkable find, linked to the Huligiyakatti area, offers valuable insights into the ancient water management systems and religious practices of the region, according to officials on Friday. The discovery was made during routine operations conducted by the Karnataka Irrigation Corporation near the Huligi Dam. The inscription came to light thanks to Mallikarjuna Hospalya, a communication and documentation expert, who promptly informed the state archaeological museums and heritage department about the presence of this important artefact.

Located at the source of the Huligi dam on the Tungabhadra River, the inscription measures an impressive 14 feet in length and 3 feet in width. It emerged due to the reduced water levels in the Tungabhadra River, a consequence of this year’s lower than average rainfall. Historians and archaeologists are particularly excited by this find, viewing it as a crucial piece of evidence for understanding the region’s historical landscape. The inscription not only highlights the advanced engineering skills of the Vijayanagara period but also underscores the cultural and religious significance of water management in sustaining both agricultural and spiritual sites during that era.

The state archaeological museums and heritage department is now focused on preserving the inscription and conducting comprehensive research to uncover more about the historical context and significance of Huligiyakatti. This endeavour aims to shed light on the sophisticated methods of water management employed during the Vijayanagara dynasty, reflecting the intertwined nature of practical engineering and religious devotion.

This discovery adds a rich layer to the historical narrative of the Vijayanagara Empire, renowned for its contributions to art, architecture, and administration. The artefact’s preservation and study will likely provide deeper insights into the daily lives, agricultural practices, and spiritual observances of the people who thrived under this historic South Indian empire. As this significant find continues to be examined, it is anticipated that further revelations will emerge, enhancing our understanding of the Vijayanagara dynasty’s impact on the region. This inscription not only serves as a testament to the empire’s advanced capabilities but also as a reminder of the intricate relationship between human ingenuity and the natural environment in India’s historical context.
