Heavy rain in north India is expected to disrupt weather conditions across several states from September 26, with the India Meteorological Department warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in parts of the region and central India.
Uttarakhand faces the most severe warning, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall forecast on September 26 and isolated very heavy rainfall likely on September 27. The IMD has also forecast isolated heavy rain over Himachal Pradesh on September 26 and 28, Uttarakhand on September 28, and both West and East Uttar Pradesh on September 26-27.
Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over Uttarakhand from September 26 to 28. Similar conditions are expected in Himachal Pradesh on September 27-28 and across Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad from September 28 to 30. West and East Uttar Pradesh are likely to see widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning on September 26.
The forecast also covers central India. West Madhya Pradesh is likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning on September 26, followed by isolated to scattered rainfall and thunderstorms from September 27 to 30. East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh are expected to see similar conditions during September 26-28. Very heavy rainfall is likely over West Madhya Pradesh on September 26 and East Madhya Pradesh during the same period.
The weather system is expected to affect other regions as well. Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning on September 26. Isolated heavy rainfall is forecast over Odisha and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. Assam and Meghalaya are likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rain from September 26 to 28, while rainfall is also expected across other northeastern states during the forecast period.
The IMD has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada on September 26. Isolated to scattered rain is also likely over Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada during the next few days. Strong surface winds are expected over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada.
Southern states are also likely to see scattered rain. Rainfall is forecast over Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from September 26 to 30, while Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep and Coastal Karnataka are expected to receive rain during parts of the same period. Telangana, North Interior Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka and Coastal Andhra Pradesh are also included in the forecast. Gusty winds of up to 50 kmph are likely over Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema during different periods between September 26 and 28.
Marine conditions are expected to remain hazardous along parts of the eastern coast. Squally winds reaching 45-55 kmph, with gusts up to 65 kmph, are likely over parts of the Bay of Bengal and along and off the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts before gradually weakening. The sea is expected to remain very rough to rough over the westcentral and northwest Bay of Bengal and along parts of the Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal coasts. The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the affected waters until conditions improve.
