India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper service is set to strengthen overnight rail connectivity between Guwahati and Howrah, marking a significant step in modernising long-distance passenger transport across eastern and north-eastern India. Following the successful completion of trials and safety certification, the new service is expected to begin operations this month, offering a faster overnight travel option for commuters, businesses, students and tourists while reinforcing the region’s strategic transport network.
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper service extends the semi-high-speed rail programme into overnight travel, an area traditionally dominated by premium express trains. Railway authorities have confirmed that the inaugural route will connect Guwahati with Howrah, creating a high-capacity corridor between two major economic centres that support trade, education, healthcare and tourism across the eastern region.The train has been designed with fully air-conditioned sleeper accommodation across multiple travel classes, accommodating more than 800 passengers in a 16-coach configuration. While the train is capable of operating at much higher speeds, it will initially run within the approved operational limits for the corridor, balancing efficiency with network safety and infrastructure readiness.Urban mobility experts note that improved overnight rail services can influence regional economic activity beyond the two terminal cities. Faster and more dependable connections often encourage business travel, improve labour mobility and strengthen access to educational institutions and healthcare facilities.
