Gurugram Underpass to Link Hero Honda Chowk with Dwarka Expressway

The underpass on Dwarka Expressway, which will link Basai Road Overbridge with Sectors 102 and 102A, is slated to open by the end of June, according to officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

This 584-metre-long infrastructure project, constructed at a cost of ₹24 crore, features four lanes to facilitate traffic movement on both sides. The new underpass is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion from Hero Honda Chowk to various residential sectors across the expressway. It will connect Hero Honda Chowk to both sides of the Dwarka Expressway, linking with six sectors on the western side, including Sectors 102, 102A, 103, 106, Kherki Majra, Basai, Dhankot, and other adjoining areas. A senior official from the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) indicated that the underpass would eventually provide connectivity to a proposed road from Sector 102-102A to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhadsa village, Jhajjar. This development will allow residents of Gurugram easier access to the hospital in Jhajjar and beyond.

The proposed road, to be constructed by the Public Works Department (PWD), will pass through Mankdola, Budhera, Dhankot, and Kherki Majra villages. The process of land acquisition for this project has already begun, as confirmed by an official. In April 2023, Haryana’s former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar inaugurated the newly built Basai flyover, which stretches from Basai village to the Dwarka Expressway. However, the completion of the underpass project was delayed due to the necessity of constructing service roads on both sides to facilitate surface traffic movement on the Dwarka Expressway.

NHAI officials cited legal disputes over land acquisition on the western side of the expressway as the primary reason for the delays. The Haryana government later intervened, ensuring that the required land was handed over to NHAI, allowing construction to proceed. The completion of this underpass is anticipated to enhance connectivity and ease traffic flow significantly, benefiting residents and commuters in the region. As part of Gurugram’s ongoing infrastructure development, this project underscores the city’s commitment to improving urban mobility and addressing traffic congestion issues. The new underpass is not only a crucial link between key sectors but also a testament to the collaborative efforts of state authorities and infrastructure agencies in overcoming legal and logistical challenges to deliver essential urban infrastructure projects.
