Gurugram Uber Driver Accused of Locking Passenger in Cab

An Uber driver in Gurugram has been accused of locking a woman software engineer inside his cab, demanding an additional fare and allegedly handling her during an early-morning ride from Delhi airport. Uber has suspended the driver’s account after the passenger publicly described the incident, while police are investigating the matter.

According to the passenger’s account, she booked an Uber from Delhi airport to Gurugram, with the app showing a fare of approximately Rs 625. After the journey ended, the driver allegedly showed her a screenshot from Rapido displaying a fare of Rs 1,479 and insisted that she pay the higher amount. She said she told him that the screenshot was not from Uber and paid the fare shown on the Uber application.

The passenger alleged that the driver then locked her inside the vehicle and refused to let her remove her luggage until she paid Rs 1,479. When she attempted to retrieve her belongings, he allegedly held her hand and shut the window beside the seat where the luggage had been placed. The account was shared by the passenger on X, where she described the episode as one of the most frightening experiences of her life.

She further alleged that she eventually managed to remove her belongings and tried to enter her home. According to her account, the driver followed her, attempted to force open the gate, abused her and threatened to kill her. She said the incident took place in Gurugram at around 4:45 am.

The passenger identified the driver in her post as Jamil Zahid Khan. The report does not establish whether a formal police case has been registered, nor does it provide details of any arrest or other police action. Police were reported to be examining the matter at the time of publication.

Uber took action against the driver’s account after receiving the passenger’s complaint through social media. The reported sequence raises immediate questions about how ride-hailing platforms handle fare disputes, passenger confinement allegations and safety complaints after a trip has ended. In app-based transport, the digital fare displayed at booking and the platform’s trip record are central to resolving disagreements, while the passenger’s ability to leave the vehicle remains a basic safety concern.

The case also highlights the vulnerability of passengers arriving at the airport during early-morning hours, when streets and residential areas may have fewer people nearby. The available report contains the passenger’s allegations and the company’s account suspension, but further details about the police inquiry, the driver’s response and any formal charges were not available in the supplied material. The investigation and any subsequent official action will determine the facts of the case.
