Gurugram is set to construct five new underpasses along the Old Gurugram Metro route. This initiative, spearheaded by the Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL), aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve the commuting experience for residents.
The proposed underpasses are strategically located at key junctions: Sector 3A/4/5 Chowk near Railway Road, the junction from Sector 5 to Sheetla Mata Road, Bajghera Road to Krishna Chowk, Rejangla Chowk, and the Palam Vihar Road junction leading to Udyog Vihar and Old Delhi Road. These locations have been identified based on traffic density and the need for seamless connectivity. An estimated budget of ₹350 crore has been allocated for the construction of these underpasses. The Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) will be prepared by GMRL’s designated agency, ensuring that the designs align with the city’s broader urban development plans.
This development is part of the second phase of the Old Gurugram Metro project, which encompasses a 28.5-kilometre stretch from Millennium City Centre to Cyber City. The first phase has already seen the issuance of a ₹1,286 crore tender for civil work extending from Millennium City Centre to Sector 9. The integration of underpasses with the metro infrastructure is a strategic decision to minimize disruptions and expedite project completion. By synchronizing the construction timelines, authorities aim to reduce the impact on daily commuters and ensure efficient use of resources.
In addition to the underpasses, a flyover at Umang Bhardwaj Chowk is slated for construction by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). This flyover is expected to further ease traffic flow and complement the metro’s expansion efforts. The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has emphasized the importance of these infrastructural developments in addressing the city’s growing traffic challenges. By investing in sustainable and efficient transport solutions, Gurugram aims to enhance the quality of life for its residents and support the city’s economic growth.
The upcoming underpasses are anticipated to play a pivotal role in decongesting major intersections, reducing travel time, and promoting the use of public transport. As Gurugram continues to evolve as a major urban hub, such initiatives underscore the city’s commitment to building a resilient and inclusive infrastructure framework. Residents and stakeholders are optimistic about the positive impact of these developments. The collaborative efforts between various governmental agencies reflect a unified approach to urban planning and a vision for a more connected Gurugram.
As the city embarks on this transformative journey, the integration of modern infrastructure with sustainable practices will be crucial in shaping Gurugram’s future as a model for urban development.
