Gurugram Iconic Roads Plan Targets Potholes, Encroachments and Litter

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) plans to upgrade seven major roads in the city as “iconic” corridors, with measures covering road repairs, accessibility, cleanliness enforcement and online fines for smoking, spitting and throwing chewing gum.

The plan was discussed at a meeting chaired by GMDA Chief Executive Officer P.C. Meena two days before the report was published. The seven identified roads have a combined length of about 19 kilometres and include MG Road, Vyapar Kendra Road, Galleria Road, the main road connecting Signature Tower with Millennium City Centre metro station, Sanath Road, the stretch from AIT Chowk to Sikanderpur metro station and the road linking Sikanderpur metro station with Cyber Hub.

The proposed iconic-road programme includes designated smoking and no-smoking zones. People found smoking in no-smoking areas will face online fines, according to the report. The authority also plans to penalise spitting and throwing chewing gum on these roads. Special teams equipped with body cameras will be deployed to enforce the restrictions and are expected to interact with citizens politely and respectfully.

Information boards will be installed at intersections to communicate cleanliness messages and warn users about prohibited activities. Green and blue dustbins will also be placed along the roads, with daily waste collection planned from these points.

The programme includes accessibility improvements for pedestrians with disabilities. The roads are expected to be arranged so that wheelchair users can move more easily. Footpaths will be repaired, unfinished sections will be paved and green areas will be improved. The roads will also be cleared of encroachments and provided with additional information signage.

Separately, GMDA has identified a larger network of roads measuring approximately 24.5 kilometres for repair and improvement by 7 November. This list includes roads around Medanta Hospital, sectors 30-31, 32-39, 39-40, 45-46, 46-47, 50-51, 51-57, 65-66, 75-75A and 75-76, as well as routes between RD City and Ambedkar Chowk, Ambedkar Chowk and Mayfield Garden, Rezangla Chowk and the Delhi border, Sector 21-22, Signature Chowk and Maharana Pratap Chowk, Maharana Pratap Chowk and Atul Kataria Chowk, Golf Course Road and the Ghata traffic signal, and Rampura Road.

These roads are to be made pothole-free, while their footpaths, green areas and unfinished sections are to be repaired. The separate 24.5-kilometre programme also includes removing encroachments and installing information boards.

The measures follow a meeting held by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on 2 October, during which officials were reprimanded over Gurugram’s poor condition. The chief minister assigned Rajesh Khullar, the state’s chief principal secretary, responsibility for improving conditions in the Millennium City. The 7 November deadline is the next stated milestone for the wider road-repair programme.
