Gurugram Bus Fleet Upgrade Supports Cleaner Commutes
Gurugram: Gurugram is preparing to modernise a section of its public transport network after authorities approved the replacement of 25 ageing compressed natural gas (CNG) buses with new Bharat Stage VI-compliant vehicles. The decision is expected to improve service reliability while complementing the city’s broader transition towards lower-emission public transport, an increasingly important priority as daily commuter demand continues to rise across the National Capital Region.
The approved Gurugram city bus fleet replacement programme will introduce 12-metre standard-floor buses, each capable of accommodating 36 seated passengers. While the total fleet strength will remain at 150 vehicles, transport officials believe replacing older buses that have become operationally inefficient will reduce maintenance-related disruptions and improve journey consistency for thousands of daily commuters. Urban mobility specialists note that fleet renewal has become an essential part of maintaining dependable city transport systems. Older buses typically experience higher breakdown rates, increased operating costs and lower fuel efficiency, placing pressure on municipal transport services while affecting passenger confidence. Introducing newer BS-VI compliant buses is also expected to reduce tailpipe emissions compared with older-generation vehicles, supporting cleaner urban air alongside operational improvements. The bus replacement programme is being implemented alongside Gurugram’s wider transition to electric public transport.
Transport authorities have already received the first fully air-conditioned electric bus for operational testing, with additional electric buses scheduled for phased induction over the coming months. Officials have outlined plans for a significantly larger electric fleet in the longer term as the city seeks to expand connectivity to emerging residential and commercial districts. According to officials, the electric buses are designed to travel more than 236 kilometres on a single charge while supporting rapid charging capabilities. The vehicles will also incorporate accessibility features, including reserved seating for women and senior citizens as well as dedicated wheelchair space, reflecting a broader shift towards more inclusive public transport infrastructure. The Gurugram city bus fleet modernisation also extends beyond vehicles. Authorities informed the transport board that commuters can now make fare payments through any UPI-enabled digital payment platform.
Digital transactions currently account for nearly one-third of fare collections, indicating a gradual shift towards cashless ticketing and more efficient revenue management. Urban planners suggest that infrastructure upgrades must continue alongside fleet expansion if cities are to encourage greater public transport adoption. Bus priority measures, improved route integration, better passenger information systems and last-mile connectivity remain equally important for reducing dependence on private vehicles and easing congestion. As Gurugram continues to expand, transport investments that combine cleaner technology, operational reliability and accessible services are likely to play a growing role in shaping a more resilient urban mobility network. The coming months will determine how effectively these fleet upgrades translate into better daily travel experiences and support the city’s long-term sustainability goals.
