The Delhi Cabinet has approved a ₹244.9-crore project to build a 250-bed superspecialty trauma block at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Dilshad Garden, with the seven-storey facility scheduled to be completed by 2028. The block is intended to expand emergency care, critical care, diagnostics and surgery capacity at the government hospital, which serves east Delhi.
The project will be developed under Phase-IV of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. The proposed building will include a basement, a ground floor and six upper floors. Its planned facilities include 48 specialist outpatient department rooms and nine modern operation theatres.
The trauma block will have 77 critical-care beds, including 70 ICU beds and five burns ICU beds. The remaining critical-care beds will support emergency and isolation services. Of the total 250 beds, 20 will be allocated for emergency care, four for isolation, 22 for pre- and post-surgery care, 102 for general wards and 25 for private rooms.
The basement will house a blood bank and laboratory. A 24×7 emergency department will be located on the ground floor alongside CT scan, MRI and X-ray facilities. The second floor will accommodate a 72-bed ICU, while the fourth and fifth floors will contain 175 general and private ward beds. The sixth floor will include offices, classrooms and a laboratory for training doctors.
The facility is planned to provide specialist services in neurology, orthopaedics, dermatology and dental care, in addition to emergency treatment and surgical support. The proposed arrangement is designed to bring emergency care, imaging, surgery and intensive care within the same hospital block.
Chief minister Rekha Gupta said GTB Hospital was the only major government hospital in east Delhi and frequently experienced a heavy patient load. She said the new block would strengthen the hospital’s ability to treat accident victims and other critical patients by bringing key services under one roof.
The project will be monitored by a committee comprising senior officials from the central and Delhi governments. According to the reported project plan, the committee will meet once every three months to review construction progress. The facility is expected to be completed by 2028.
