Green Governance BMC Sets New Standard with Climate Budget

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a new standard by introducing India’s inaugural climate budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, unveiled on World Environment Day, June 5. This pioneering initiative places BMC among the global vanguard, joining the ranks of cities like Oslo, New York, and London, which have already embraced similar strategies.

Contrary to a standalone financial allocation, the climate budget is seamlessly integrated into BMC’s existing fiscal framework. A substantial portion of the capital expenditure budget, amounting to ₹10,224.24 crore, has been earmarked for projects prioritizing environmental sustainability. This allocation represents 32.18% of the total capital expenditure, reflecting BMC’s commitment to eco-friendly endeavors across various civic departments.

Key initiatives under the climate budget include transformative projects such as the waste-to-energy conversion at Deonar dumping ground, the reclamation of the defunct Mulund dumping ground, and the widespread installation of solar panel systems in peripheral hospitals. These endeavors underscore BMC’s dedication to fostering a greener urban landscape while addressing pressing environmental concerns. Furthermore, BMC’s active participation in the C40 Cities global program underscores its role as a proactive advocate for climate action. By aligning with international best practices and leveraging collaborative platforms, BMC aims to amplify its impact on climate resilience and sustainability initiatives.

The comprehensive Climate Budget report for the fiscal year 2024-25 is now available for download on the Mumbai Climate Action Plan’s official website, providing stakeholders with transparent insights into BMC’s environmental stewardship efforts.
