Gota Land Subsidence Displaces 21 Ahmedabad Families Into Hotels

Land subsidence in Ahmedabad’s Gota area has forced the evacuation of Shyona Shikhar 2 and Shyona Shikhar 3, leaving 21 families to stay in hotels while authorities await a structural safety assessment, according to a report by Sandesh. The incident has disrupted residents during the festive period and left them uncertain about when they can return home.

The two buildings were vacated as an immediate safety measure after the ground reportedly subsided in the surrounding area. Residents said that although hotels provide basic facilities, they cannot offer the security and comfort of their own homes. Families have also raised concerns about where they will stay through Dev Diwali if the buildings remain inaccessible.

Residents told Sandesh that they would be allowed to decide on returning only after the structural report is completed and officially communicated. Until the assessment establishes that the buildings are safe, families are unable to re-enter their homes, leaving them in temporary accommodation without a confirmed return date.

The episode has also raised questions about excavation and construction activity near the buildings. Local residents alleged that substantial digging was taking place without the required construction permission and questioned why municipal authorities did not intervene earlier. They accused the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation of negligence and alleged that irregularities had been allowed to continue. These allegations have not been independently established in the supplied report.

For the displaced households, the immediate concern is not only the safety of the buildings but also the uncertainty surrounding temporary accommodation, household access and the protection of their belongings. Residents said they were waiting for the authorities to clarify when the structural report would be released and what further action would follow.

The incident highlights the importance of coordinating excavation controls, construction permissions and structural-safety inspections in dense residential areas. A land-related failure near occupied buildings can quickly become a housing emergency when residents are forced to leave before the safety status of their homes is determined.

The next formal step, according to the residents cited in the report, is the completion and disclosure of the structural assessment. The families’ return to Shyona Shikhar 2 and Shyona Shikhar 3 will depend on the findings of that report and the instructions issued by the authorities.
