GMDA Steps Up Efforts to Combat Illegal Construction Activities

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has escalated its campaign against unauthorized construction activities within its jurisdiction.

A collaborative inspection, involving teams from GMDA, CID, the sports department, the panchayat, and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN), was recently carried out. During the inspection, it came to light that 13 cafes were operating without the requisite permits along a 1km stretch in the revenue estate of Gairatpur Bas village. This discovery underscores the GMDA’s commitment to enforcing regulatory compliance and upholding urban planning standards in Gurugram. Such concerted efforts aim to deter unlawful construction practices and preserve the integrity of the city’s development framework.

“GMDA has been aware of these unauthorised constructions for a while. We had sent showcause notices earlier as well. The authority also plans to expand its monitoring with 42 villages under surveillance for potential illegal constructions,” said a GMDA official. “Furthermore, it was found that these establishments in Gairatpur Bas were leased for five to 10 years. Landowners were collecting high rents, between Rs 80,000 to Rs 1 lakh per month. However, these cafes did not have change of land use (CLU) permission. These cafes have even set up swimming pools without approvals,” said RS Batth, the district town planner from GMDA. He stated that these establishments would receive a final notice, and legal action would follow. Gairatpur Bas is under the GMDA’s jurisdiction and any construction or commercial activity in these areas requires a CLU certificate from the metropolitan authority. Without it, no such activities are allowed.
