GHMC Introduces GIS for Urban Planning

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has announced the initiation of a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based survey and mapping project for properties and utilities within its jurisdiction. This initiative aims to enhance urban planning and citizen-centric services through the collection and analysis of spatial data.

In a statement released on Friday, the GHMC highlighted that surveyors will begin visiting homes to collect data in about a month. The civic authority has appealed for the cooperation of all residents and property owners to ensure the success of this ambitious project. “We request the cooperation of all residents and property owners,” the statement read.

A public web portal will be launched as part of the project, allowing citizens to voluntarily link their property assessments to the GIS map. This platform aims to facilitate greater citizen participation in the decision-making process related to urban development and public utilities, thereby fostering a more inclusive approach to city planning. The primary objective of this GIS-based mapping project is to enhance citizen-centric services, enabling the GHMC to better analyse, visualise, and manage spatial data in urban planning. The execution of this project has been entrusted to Neo Geo Agency, which will carry out the survey over an 18-month period, followed by an additional two years dedicated to operational maintenance.

Each property will be assigned a unique identification number through the mapping process. This ID will facilitate the identification of property locations and streamline the delivery of various services, including door-to-door garbage collection, emergency disaster management, and community engagement. The integration of data from other departments, such as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) and the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL), is also envisaged.

The GHMC has assured that all data collected during the survey will be treated with the highest level of confidentiality and will be utilised solely for the purpose of enhancing urban management and service delivery. This commitment to data privacy aims to alleviate any concerns residents might have regarding the security of their personal information.

By leveraging GIS technology, the GHMC aims to bring about a significant transformation in urban management and service delivery. The project is expected to provide a robust foundation for informed decision-making, improved resource allocation, and enhanced public services, ultimately contributing to the overall development and betterment of Hyderabad.

As the GHMC embarks on this innovative project, the active participation and cooperation of Hyderabad’s residents will be crucial in achieving the desired outcomes. The GIS-based mapping initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to urban planning, setting a benchmark for other cities to follow.
