Ghaziabad PUC Checks Begin at Petrol Pumps as Pollution Drive Tightens

Ghaziabad’s Transport Department will begin a three-day inspection drive at petrol pumps from Wednesday to check pollution under control (PUC) certificates, with vehicles lacking valid certificates potentially being denied fuel and facing action under the applicable rules.

The campaign follows the implementation of Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), under which transport authorities have been directed to intensify checks on vehicles operating on the city’s roads. Transport Department teams will remain stationed at petrol pumps during the three-day exercise and inspect vehicles arriving to refuel.

According to the department, more than 26,000 vehicles in Ghaziabad are currently operating without valid PUC certificates. The figure has prompted authorities to prepare stricter enforcement measures as part of efforts to control vehicular pollution in the National Capital Region.

The decision was discussed during a virtual meeting held at the government level on Tuesday. The Transport Commissioner issued directions to officials regarding the campaign and its implementation at fuel stations across the district.

Pramod Kumar Singh, Regional Transport Officer (Administration), said the three-day drive would be conducted from Wednesday in accordance with the government’s instructions. Transport Department teams will be deployed at petrol pumps to verify the PUC certificates of vehicles seeking fuel.

Vehicles without valid certificates may be stopped from receiving petrol or diesel during the campaign. The department also said that vehicle owners found without the required documentation would face action under the prescribed rules. The source report did not specify the number of teams, the list of participating petrol pumps, or the penalties that would be imposed in individual cases.

The inspections are intended not only to enforce the certificate requirement but also to encourage vehicle owners to obtain or renew their PUC documents. Officials will raise awareness about securing pollution certificates during the campaign, alongside checking compliance at fuel stations.

The drive places petrol pumps at the centre of a short-term enforcement mechanism linking access to fuel with vehicle-emissions compliance. Its immediate implementation will depend on the deployment of departmental teams and the verification process followed at individual stations. The three-day campaign is scheduled to begin on Wednesday and continue through the following two days.
