Ghaziabad has approved a 2-kilometre, four-lane elevated road on a congested stretch of GT Road, along with an underpass to replace a railway crossing, in a package of urban infrastructure proposals worth Rs 66.73 crore. The projects were cleared at a meeting of the urban infrastructure fund chaired by Meerut Divisional Commissioner Bhanu Chandra Goswami at the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) office on Thursday.
The elevated road will run from opposite the Ghantaghar Ramlila Maidan through Chaudhary Mor to Bhatia Mor and the Aadhaar Seva Kendra. The route is described as highly busy and prone to regular traffic jams. The approved structure is intended to separate through traffic from surface-level movement on this section of GT Road.
The meeting also approved the closure of the railway gate near DPSG between the new Ghaziabad railway station and the LTH crossing. An underpass will be constructed in its place. The proposal links the road intervention to a wider effort to improve traffic movement and road safety around railway infrastructure and busy urban junctions.
According to the report, the approved proposals under the urban infrastructure fund are intended to improve traffic convenience, road safety and civic facilities. The available information does not specify the construction start date, completion deadline, detailed design, land requirements or traffic-management plan for either the elevated road or the underpass.
The funding meeting also cleared construction of 30 open gyms at parks and other locations across the Ghaziabad development area. The work is expected to cost Rs 4.50 crore and is intended to provide residents with access to exercise facilities closer to their homes. Several land and development proposals were also considered. The remaining amount from the Rs 60 crore already approved for the under-construction Bunkar Mart in the Madhuban-Bapudham scheme will be released for essential work. The GDA has been receiving income from the sale of plots in the scheme, which has helped advance development work there, according to the report.
The meeting further approved proposals related to land owned by the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association. The land will be considered through land pooling for a stadium, with a draft memorandum of understanding and feasibility report approved for the next stage. The proposed stadium is expected by the authorities to support hotels, restaurants, tourism, transport, local businesses, sports training, support services and event-management employment. No construction timeline or project cost was provided.
The GDA also changed the designated use of several plots. A 5,965.29-square-metre hotel plot in Shakti Khand IV of the Indirapuram scheme was changed to residential use. Two group-housing plots measuring 12,868.88 square metres and 2,020 square metres in the Koyal Enclave residential scheme were also converted to residential use. In the Indraprastha residential scheme, a 4,353-square-metre plot was approved for plotted development and single multi-residential units.
The next steps for the elevated road, underpass and other proposals will depend on detailed project preparation, tendering and implementation decisions by the concerned authorities. The report does not state when construction contracts will be issued or when work will begin.
