GAIL and Karnataka to Develop 1 GW Renewable Energy

GAIL (India) Ltd has formalised a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Karnataka to develop renewable energy projects totalling up to 1 gigawatt (GW) over the next five years.

This strategic partnership, inked in Bengaluru on May 9, 2025, underscores GAIL’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2035, aligning with its broader sustainability objectives. The collaboration entails the Karnataka government’s facilitation in securing necessary approvals, clearances, and incentives for GAIL, in accordance with the state’s prevailing policies and regulations. The projects envisioned under this MoU encompass a diversified renewable energy portfolio, including ground-mounted solar, rooftop solar, floating solar, wind energy, and integrated storage solutions. This initiative is poised to not only augment Karnataka’s renewable energy capacity but also contribute significantly to employment generation and infrastructure development within the state.

GAIL’s venture into renewable energy in Karnataka represents a pivotal step in its transition from a traditional natural gas utility to a comprehensive energy company with a robust focus on sustainability. The company’s strategy involves the electrification of processes, integration of renewable energy sources, installation of battery energy storage systems, and exploration of green hydrogen and carbon dioxide valorisation initiatives. These measures are integral to GAIL’s roadmap for achieving a 100% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2035, as outlined in its Net-Zero Action Plan.

The financial commitment for this initiative is estimated at ₹5,000 crore, reflecting GAIL’s dedication to investing in clean energy infrastructure. The projects are expected to be implemented through a combination of land acquisition from farmers on a lease basis and allocations facilitated by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB). This approach aims to ensure timely execution while fostering community engagement and support. Karnataka’s role as a leader in renewable energy is further solidified through this partnership, reinforcing its position as a preferred destination for clean energy investments. The state’s policy ecosystem, skilled workforce, and land availability make it an attractive hub for companies focusing on sustainability. The collaboration with GAIL is anticipated to enhance Karnataka’s standing as a green energy hub, contributing to the state’s economic growth and climate objectives.

GAIL’s foray into renewable energy in Karnataka is emblematic of a broader shift in India’s energy sector, where traditional energy companies are increasingly embracing sustainable practices. This transition is critical in the context of India’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, with GAIL’s accelerated target of 2035 setting a benchmark for the industry. The company’s initiatives are expected to play a significant role in driving sustainable development and achieving national and global climate goals. The MoU between GAIL and the Government of Karnataka represents a significant milestone in India’s renewable energy journey. By leveraging Karnataka’s conducive environment for clean energy investments and GAIL’s expertise in energy infrastructure, this partnership is poised to make substantial contributions to the state’s renewable energy capacity, economic development, and environmental sustainability.
