Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to fast-track the opening of additional sections of the Mumbai Coastal Road and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) connector. This initiative aims to alleviate congestion and improve connectivity along this vital transport corridor.
The Mumbai Coastal Road project, a 10.5-kilometre stretch from Marine Lines to Worli, is making steady progress. The BMC has already inaugurated two segments of this extensive project: the southbound route from Worli to Marine Lines on March 11, and the northbound route from Marine Lines to Worli Lotus Jetty on June 10, covering roughly 6.5 kilometres in total.
Originally scheduled for completion by the end of October, the final phase of the project involves linking the Coastal Road with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link via two arch bridge girders. However, in a recent night inspection, CM Shinde instructed BMC officials to hasten the opening of one connector bridge by the end of July. This directive follows a thorough review of the project’s progress, including ancillary infrastructure such as inter-passage roads and marine walkways along the Marine Drive to Worli route. Notably, two bow arch string girders have been installed to facilitate the connection, with one already in place. Shinde emphasised the need for smooth traffic flow in both directions by ensuring the connector’s opening by July’s end.
Despite significant milestones, the project still faces several challenges. The recent installation of the second girder, weighing 2,500 metric tons, adds complexity to the construction efforts. Additionally, the construction of roads and necessary waterproofing measures require meticulous attention before the connector can be opened to the public. The BMC is working diligently to meet these requirements and ensure the infrastructure is safe and ready for use.
The expedited opening of the Coastal Road and BWSL connector is expected to significantly enhance Mumbai’s traffic management and connectivity. The BMC’s proactive measures, combined with CM Shinde’s directive, highlight the government’s commitment to improving urban infrastructure and addressing the city’s transportation challenges.
