Duttapukur explosives recovery has triggered a multi-agency investigation after suspected explosive-like substances and banned chemicals were found in a car on Jessore Road late on Wednesday night, with the vehicle’s owner arrested and questioned by police.
The search operation was conducted by the National Investigation Agency, the National Security Guard, forensic experts and Barasat District police, according to a senior police officer quoted by Times of India. Investigators are examining whether the materials were intended for subversive activities or were being transported to Kolkata.
Police said the Special Task Force had received intelligence about suspicious materials inside a car parked in the Tetultala area of Duttapukur. The vehicle was kept under surveillance before being intercepted on Wednesday night. Its owner, Rakibul Islam, who operates a local motorcycle showroom, was detained and subsequently arrested.
The recovered items reportedly include explosive-like substances and banned chemicals, along with iron mesh rods. Their nature and potency have not yet been established. Forensic examination will determine whether the materials are capable of causing an explosion and will help investigators identify their composition.
The precise destination and intended use of the consignment remain unclear. Investigators are also trying to establish where the materials came from, who may have instructed Islam to transport them and whether other people were involved. The police have not confirmed any subversive link.
Barasat Police District Superintendent J. Mercy said the investigation was underway and that the nature of the suspected explosives was being examined. The accused had already been arrested, she said, adding that further details would be provided as the investigation progressed.
Islam reportedly left his car-repair business about a decade ago and later opened motorcycle showrooms in areas including Tetultala and Bira in Duttapukur and Berachampa in Deganga. Investigators are also examining whether an explosion at a motorcycle showroom reportedly owned by him in Amdanga several years ago has any connection with the latest recovery.
Local sources said the car had been parked beside the Road King showroom on Tetultala Road for two days before the operation. Further findings are expected after forensic tests and the ongoing police investigation determine the materials’ composition, origin and intended destination.
