Dug-Up Roads Pose Safety Threats in Madipakkam Neighbourhood

Madipakkam, a bustling neighbourhood in Chennai, is currently grappling with a significant infrastructure challenge, as every third street finds itself torn up for civic works. The absence of proper cautionary measures and road signage has transformed the area into a hazardous maze, posing grave risks to motorists and residents alike.

Over 250 locations in Madipakkam have witnessed road excavation to facilitate the laying of sewer lines, water pipes, and stormwater drains. However, the lack of barricades or caution tapes around these dug-up areas has heightened the danger for road users, with many encountering unexpected obstacles and disruptions to their daily commute. One of the major concerns voiced by residents is the absence of warning signs and diversions, leading to confusion and frustration among motorists navigating the area. Even upon completion of civic projects, roads remain unrepaired for months, exacerbating the situation in areas like Sadasivam Nagar, Ram Nagar, and Guberan Nagar.

Residents and activists in Madipakkam have expressed their dismay over the deteriorating road conditions, highlighting the adverse impact on public health and safety. The uneven and bumpy rides on these damaged roads have resulted in a surge of spondylitis, back pain, and spinal injuries among regular commuters, particularly two-wheeler riders. Despite numerous complaints to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), residents lament that only patchwork repairs are carried out in response, leaving the majority of roads in a state of disrepair. This ongoing plight has raised questions about the efficacy of civic authorities in addressing the infrastructural woes plaguing Madipakkam.

In response to residents’ grievances, GCC official acknowledged the pressing need for ongoing infrastructure work but assured that contractors would be held accountable for maintaining safety standards. He also underscored the importance of post-rain maintenance to mitigate risks for road users in the area. As Madipakkam continues to grapple with its infrastructure challenges, residents await tangible solutions and swift action from civic authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents and commuters navigating the neighbourhood’s streets.
