A Dombivli illegal market operating every Thursday on the 100-foot Ring Route in the Anmol Nagari area of Dombivli West was cleared by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation, with around 2,000 hawkers removed, according to a report by Loksatta.
The market had reportedly been operating for the past four months near the Garibachapada area. Vendors began setting up at about 4 p.m. every Thursday and continued trading until 11 p.m., selling vegetables, household goods and other items at low prices.
The action followed information received on Thursday evening by Abhiman Pawar, assistant commissioner of KDMC’s H ward. Pawar directed the civic hawker-removal squad to act against the market. The enforcement operation was carried out from about 6 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., the report said.
According to Loksatta, the market had attracted residents from several parts of Dombivli because of the range and comparatively low prices of the goods sold there. The operation took place on the Ring Route, a road intended to support movement through the area, while the report described the market as unauthorised.
The report also said that unauthorised markets in the Ganeshnagar-Vrindavan Society and Ganesh Tower areas, as well as in Koper and near the Kalavati Aai Temple in Devichapada, had previously been stopped by Pawar during the past four months. It alleged that local individuals were involved in organising the Anmol Nagari market.
KDMC commissioner Abhinav Goyal has instructed assistant commissioners to take strict action against hawkers and unauthorised markets, according to the report. The civic administration’s next enforcement steps in the Anmol Nagari area were not specified.
