Disability Pension Denied for 9 Years, Woman Carries Husband to Collectorate

A woman in Madhya Pradesh’s Burhanpur district carried her husband on her back to the district collectorate after he reportedly went nine years without a tricycle or disability pension, highlighting the difficulty faced by families seeking basic welfare support through government offices.

Bindubai, a resident of Mahajan Colony, reached the collectorate during a public grievance hearing on Tuesday with her husband, Dayashankar, according to a report by the Times of India. She met Burhanpur Collector Vivek Kumar and sought a tricycle and pension for him.

A video of the incident surfaced on social media on Saturday night and showed Bindubai carrying Dayashankar inside the collectorate. The incident took place on Tuesday, while the video became public several days later.

Bindubai told officials that Dayashankar had suffered paralysis nine years ago. During his treatment, one of his legs was amputated, leaving him unable to walk, the report said. Since then, she has reportedly carried him whenever he needed to travel.

She said she had taken her husband to various government offices over the past nine years while seeking assistance, but had not received either a tricycle or a pension. Repeatedly transporting him herself had caused her considerable physical and mental strain, she told officials.

The case brings attention to the practical barriers faced by people with severe mobility limitations when welfare services require repeated visits to government offices. In Dayashankar’s case, his inability to move independently has meant that Bindubai must physically carry him whenever he needs to access public services.

The report did not provide details of the eligibility documents submitted by the family, the reason for the delay in receiving the requested assistance, or the administration’s decision on the pension and tricycle. It also did not state whether the district administration had announced a timeline for resolving the application.

The matter was raised during the district collectorate’s public grievance hearing, where Bindubai sought intervention from the district administration. Further action would depend on the authorities’ verification of the family’s application and eligibility for the requested support.
