Delhi Water Supply Gap Persists Despite Higher Inflows
Delhi continues to grapple with uneven water availability across several neighbourhoods even as raw water inflows from neighbouring Haryana have improved in recent weeks, highlighting deeper structural weaknesses in the capital’s urban water management system.
The development is significant for a city that depends heavily on inter-state water-sharing arrangements to meet daily demand. While additional water is reaching Delhi through key canal networks, residents in parts of north, central and south Delhi continue to report supply disruptions, underscoring the growing challenge of balancing resource availability with treatment, storage and distribution capacity. According to officials familiar with the situation, water releases from Haryana have risen following recent coordination between the two governments. The challenge comes at a time when Delhi’s water demand is rising sharply. Summer temperatures, population growth and expanding urban activity place increasing pressure on a network that already struggles to meet peak-season requirements. Delhi receives water through a combination of river systems and interstate canal networks, making it vulnerable to seasonal fluctuations, upstream usage patterns and changing weather conditions. As climate variability intensifies, experts warn that cities will need stronger local water security measures, including wastewater recycling, rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge.
