Delhi-Varanasi Bullet Train Gets Approval, 3.33-Hour Trip Planned

The Delhi-Varanasi bullet train corridor has received approval, with the proposed high-speed route planned to connect the national capital with Kanpur, Lucknow, Varanasi and Patna before extending to Guwahati, according to a report by Aaj Tak Business quoting Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The proposed service could reduce the journey between Delhi and Varanasi to 3 hours 33 minutes.

Vaishnaw reportedly said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved the north corridor. The announcement places the proposed line within a wider effort to improve high-speed connectivity between Delhi and major cities across northern and eastern India. The route is also expected to improve links between Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Varanasi, Patna and Guwahati.

The travel times cited in the report include 59 minutes between Delhi and Agra, 1 hour 45 minutes between Delhi and Kanpur, 2 hours 12 minutes between Delhi and Lucknow, 3 hours 33 minutes between Delhi and Varanasi, and 4 hours 33 minutes between New Delhi and Patna. These are proposed journey times for the completed north corridor, not current operating schedules.

The report did not specify a construction start date or an expected opening year for the Delhi-Varanasi-Guwahati corridor. It said route mapping and the identification of locations would follow the approval, after which work would begin in phases. The long corridor may be divided into sections for implementation, although details of the packages, stations, land requirements and funding arrangements have not yet been announced in the supplied report.

The proposed corridor is part of a larger high-speed rail expansion outlined under the Union Budget 2026-27. Seven bullet train corridors have been proposed: Delhi-Varanasi, Mumbai-Pune, Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Hyderabad-Chennai, Chennai-Bengaluru and Varanasi-Siliguri via Patna. The announcement therefore signals a broader expansion of high-speed rail beyond the Mumbai-Ahmedabad project currently under construction.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is described in the report as India’s first bullet train project. It is planned to operate trains designed for speeds of up to 320 kmph, with services targeted to begin by August 2027. The report did not provide equivalent speed, station or engineering specifications for the proposed northern corridor.

Vaishnaw also said the proposed service would not be limited to wealthy passengers and that fares would be affordable and lower than comparable flight tickets. The report did not provide a fare structure, ticket prices or the basis for the comparison. Any assessment of affordability will depend on the eventual fare policy, travel distance, station access and the frequency of services.

For passengers and cities along the proposed route, the immediate development is the reported approval and the start of route planning. The next milestones are expected to include detailed mapping, location identification and decisions on how the corridor will be divided and implemented. No operational launch date has been announced.
