Central Railway Drops Superfast Tag on 6 Trains, Cuts Surcharge

Central Railway will remove the superfast classification from six trains passing through the Bhusawal division from January 1, 2027, leading to revised train numbers and the removal of supplementary charges for passengers. The change follows a revision of the trains’ average speeds, according to a senior official from the Bhusawal divisional railway manager’s office.

The Railway Board has approved the revised nomenclature and numbering of the six services. The official said the removal of the superfast tag would also end the additional charges that had been levied on passengers travelling on these trains. The services will continue to operate, but passengers will need to use their new numbers when checking schedules and making bookings from the effective date.

Under the railway classification, a train is considered superfast when its average speed between its origin and destination exceeds 50 kmph. The official said additional halts introduced in response to passenger demands had increased journey times and affected the trains’ average speeds.

“When additional halts are introduced on demands, the average speed of trains comes down as they take time to decelerate and accelerate at stations,” the official said. Once the average speed falls below 50 kmph, the train’s classification is changed. Following a review of the average speeds, the Railway Board decided to remove the superfast status from the six services.

The CSMT–Hingoli Jan Shatabdi Express, currently numbered 12071/12072, will be renumbered 11069/11070. There will be no change in its stoppages. The CSMT–Banaras Mahanagari Express, numbered 22177/22178, will become 11093/11094, while the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus–Ayodhya Cantt Tulsi Express, numbered 22129/22130, will become 11065/11066.

The Lokmanya Tilak Terminus–Banaras Express, currently 12167/12168, will be renumbered 11067/11068. The Pune–Kazipet Express, numbered 22151/22152, will become 11437/11438. The Vasco-da-Gama–Hazrat Nizamuddin Goa Express, currently 12779/12780, will be renumbered 17379/17380.

The changes will take effect on January 1, 2027. Central Railway has advised passengers to check the revised train numbers on official railway enquiry portals while booking tickets and planning journeys after the changes come into force.
