Delhi’s transport planning agencies are examining the possibility of an underground road corridor connecting central Delhi with the capital’s airport district and eventually extending seamless access towards the upcoming Noida International Airport corridor, signalling a major shift in how the National Capital Region could manage intercity mobility.
The proposal, now in the exploratory stage, involves studies commissioned by the Union road transport ministry and the National Highways Authority to assess whether a tunnel-based transport route can ease pressure on some of NCR’s most congested surface roads. Officials familiar with the discussions said the project is being evaluated in phases, beginning with a corridor linking central Delhi to the airport and Gurugram, before expanding eastward towards Sarai Kale Khan and the expressway network leading to Jewar. The proposed Delhi tunnel project comes at a time when regional travel demand is expected to rise sharply due to the operationalisation of the Noida International Airport and rapid residential expansion along the Yamuna Expressway belt. Urban planners say the success of such infrastructure will depend not only on speed and connectivity, but also on whether it reduces dependence on fragmented road systems that currently strain Delhi’s air quality and public infrastructure.
Preliminary assessments are focusing on engineering feasibility, alignment planning, entry and exit locations, and integration with existing highways. One of the key access points under consideration is near Talkatora Stadium, potentially creating direct underground connectivity for dense residential and commercial zones in central and west Delhi. Areas such as Karol Bagh, Rajendra Place and Connaught Place could see shorter travel times to the airport network if the project proceeds beyond the study stage. Transport economists note that a dedicated underground corridor may improve logistics efficiency and reduce delays caused by traffic bottlenecks on arterial routes leading to the airport. However, they caution that high-cost road infrastructure must be evaluated alongside investments in metro expansion, bus systems and non-motorised transport if the NCR region aims to achieve long-term climate and mobility goals. The Delhi tunnel project is also expected to intersect with broader plans linked to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and regional express corridors.
By connecting Sarai Kale Khan to routes leading towards Jewar, planners are attempting to create a more integrated mobility spine across Delhi, Noida and Gurugram. Analysts believe such integration could influence future real estate growth patterns, commercial development and airport-linked economic activity across the NCR. At present, authorities have not finalised a detailed alignment or construction timeline. Officials indicated that a detailed project report would only be prepared after feasibility findings are completed and technical challenges such as underground utilities, land constraints and environmental impact assessments are addressed. For residents across NCR, the project represents both an opportunity and a test. While faster airport access could improve regional mobility, urban experts say future decisions must ensure that infrastructure growth remains energy-efficient, publicly accountable and compatible with sustainable city planning objectives.
