Delhi’s National Zoological Park has introduced a set of digital visitor services aimed at improving public access, crowd management and on-ground navigation, marking a broader shift towards technology-led upgrades in urban public spaces.
The new system includes a mobile application, digital navigation tools and automated ticketing facilities designed to simplify movement inside the zoo while reducing dependence on manual services. Officials overseeing the project said the initiative forms part of a wider modernisation effort focused on improving visitor experience and operational efficiency at one of the capital’s largest public recreational institutions. The mobile platform, available on Android and iOS devices, allows visitors to access interactive maps and real-time navigation assistance within the zoo campus. The application helps users locate animal enclosures, sanitation facilities, buggy points and exit routes without relying on physical signboards alone. Multiple tour formats have also been integrated into the system, including guided routes for families and customised walking plans based on visitor preferences.
Alongside the application launch, authorities introduced self-service ticketing kiosks that support digital payments through UPI, enabling faster entry during peak visitor periods. Free public WiFi infrastructure has also been added to support app-based services and reduce connectivity barriers for users inside the premises. Urban planners tracking public infrastructure projects say such interventions are increasingly becoming essential for large civic and recreational spaces in Indian cities. Digital systems can improve crowd circulation, reduce paper dependency and support better emergency management, particularly in high-footfall destinations such as zoos, museums and transport hubs. The initiative also reflects a growing effort among public institutions to integrate smart-city features into everyday urban services without major physical expansion. Experts note that technology-enabled navigation can help reduce congestion around sensitive animal zones while improving accessibility for senior citizens and families with children.
Following the launch, senior officials conducted a review of ongoing development and management initiatives within the zoological park. Discussions reportedly focused on infrastructure improvement, visitor management systems and seasonal animal care arrangements as Delhi enters peak summer conditions. Authorities also inspected aviary sections to assess heat-management measures for birds and reviewed animal welfare arrangements in key enclosures, including those housing Asiatic lions. Wildlife management specialists have increasingly emphasised the importance of climate-sensitive enclosure planning as prolonged heat periods become more frequent across northern India. For Delhi, the latest upgrades signal how public environmental institutions are gradually adopting digital tools to improve accessibility and operational resilience. As urban recreational spaces face rising visitor numbers and climate-related pressures, future investments are likely to focus equally on technology integration, ecological management and citizen-friendly infrastructure.
