Delhi Traffic Police has advised motorists to avoid the Karampura-Moti Nagar flyover in West Delhi during a phased 40-day repair programme that is expected to affect traffic between Karampura Shivdas Puri Road and Kirti Nagar Road, also known as Patel Road, towards Shadipur. The repair work is being carried out by the Public Works Department, while the flyover will be closed in stages and its service road will remain open.
According to the advisory, the first phase will close the carriageway carrying traffic from Karampura towards Kirti Nagar until 9 October. The second phase will close the carriageway in the opposite direction, from Kirti Nagar towards Karampura, from 10 October to 29 October. The traffic police has asked commuters to avoid the affected route where possible and use alternative routes during the work period.
The advisory also asks motorists to plan journeys in advance and allow additional travel time. Drivers have been told to follow diversion signs and instructions issued at the site, comply with traffic rules and cooperate with personnel deployed in the area. The service road is expected to remain available to vehicles during both phases, although the advisory warns that traffic movement around the flyover may be affected.
The repair schedule comes as several parts of Delhi are already experiencing traffic disruption linked to infrastructure work. In south Delhi, construction related to the widening and extension of the Kalkaji flyover towards the Modi Mill flyover has created a bottleneck on the Outer Ring Road. The Kalkaji bridge has been closed for the work, affecting two lanes on either side near the construction zone and slowing traffic near the Okhla NSIC bus stop.
The traffic disruption around the Kalkaji and Modi Mill flyovers has reportedly been particularly severe during morning and evening peak hours, with motorists facing delays of between 30 minutes and an hour. The Delhi Traffic Police and PWD have introduced measures intended to ease movement, including opening a cut towards Captain Gaur Marg after vehicles descend from the Modi Mill flyover. However, the measure has not eliminated congestion, according to the report.
The advisory also refers to a separate traffic intervention near Shaheen Bagh. A U-turn is proposed on Road Number 13-A to enable signal-free movement near the area, where traffic signals have been associated with long queues. The PWD is expected to spend about Rs 22 lakh on the work, which has been proposed by the Delhi Traffic Police and is scheduled to be completed in two months.
For commuters using the Karampura-Moti Nagar corridor, the immediate operational change is the directional closure of the flyover rather than a complete shutdown of the surrounding road network. The first restriction will affect movement towards Kirti Nagar, followed by a reversal of the closed direction from 10 October. Commuters are expected to monitor on-site signage and traffic police instructions until the repair programme concludes on 29 October.
