Delhi RTR Flyover Closed After Cracks, Airport Commute Hit

The Old Rao Tula Ram (RTR) flyover carriageway towards Vasant Vihar has been temporarily closed after cracks were detected at two locations, disrupting a key route between Indira Gandhi International Airport, South Delhi and Gurugram. The closure is expected to remain in place until October 26, officials said.

Traffic snarls were reported on Wednesday after motorists were diverted to the adjoining service road. The affected flyover carriageway carries traffic from the airport towards Vasant Vihar and other parts of South Delhi, making it an important link for commuters travelling onwards to Noida and other cities in the National Capital Region.

The cracks were noticed by traffic personnel, who immediately informed the Public Works Department for necessary repairs, a senior Delhi Traffic Police officer said. The carriageway was closed as a precautionary measure to prevent an accident or injury to commuters, the officer added.

PWD officials and the Delhi Traffic Police are carrying out repair work simultaneously at both affected locations. Officials said the work is expected to be completed by October 26, after which the flyover will be reopened only following a safety clearance.

The closure places additional pressure on the service road, which is currently being used as the diversion route. Commuters using the airport-South Delhi corridor, as well as those travelling from Gurugram towards South Delhi and Noida, have been advised to allow extra time for their journeys and plan routes in advance.

Traffic personnel have been deployed in the area to guide motorists and manage the diversion. The Delhi Traffic Police has also updated Google Maps to show the flyover as closed and reflect the diversion through the service road.

Officials have asked commuters to follow instructions issued at the site and use alternative routes until the repair work is completed. For traffic-related assistance, motorists can contact the Delhi Traffic Police helpline at 1095. The flyover will be opened after the repair work and subsequent safety clearance are completed.
