Delhi Rooftop Solar Registrations Cross 1 Lakh Under PM Scheme

Delhi rooftop solar registrations have crossed one lakh under the Centre’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Gupta said the registrations reflected growing public confidence in rooftop solar and reiterated the Delhi government’s commitment to expanding clean energy across the capital. She said the administration wanted every rooftop in Delhi to become a source of solar power while reducing household electricity bills.

“Every rooftop will become a source of solar energy. Delhi government is committed to taking the capital towards green energy. Over one lakh registrations reflect growing public confidence in solar energy,” Gupta said during the Solar Plenary Session at Bharat Mandapam.

Under the Delhi implementation of the PM Surya Ghar scheme, rooftop solar systems of up to 3 kW are being installed free of cost, according to the Chief Minister. For systems with higher capacity, subsidies of up to Rs 1.56 lakh are being provided, she said.

The scheme combines central and state financial support. The Centre provides a subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 for rooftop solar systems of up to 3 kW under the national programme. The Delhi government has decided to provide a matching state subsidy of Rs 78,000, taking the total available support for eligible systems to as much as Rs 1.56 lakh.

Gupta launched the Delhi PM Surya Ghar scheme in September this year. The programme is intended to encourage households to install rooftop solar systems and reduce their dependence on conventional electricity sources. The Chief Minister described it as an important step towards energy self-reliance and said Delhi was working to expand clean-energy adoption.

The announcement places household rooftops at the centre of Delhi’s renewable-energy strategy. Unlike large power projects that require land, rooftop systems use existing building surfaces and connect energy generation more directly to individual homes. The scale of registrations will now be followed by the installation of systems and the delivery of the promised subsidies.

Gupta said the Delhi government was making continuous efforts to promote clean energy and claimed that the capital could become an example for the rest of the country in rooftop solar adoption. The government’s stated objectives are to expand solar generation, provide relief on electricity bills and move Delhi towards greater energy self-reliance.
