Delhi’s Rohtak Road will be re-carpeted after pending utility work by the Delhi Jal Board, BSES and Delhi Transco Limited is completed, Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said during a joint inspection of problem spots across central and Outer Delhi on Saturday.
The road has deteriorated after being dug up for utility work by DTL and BSES. Singh directed the agencies to coordinate their work so that roads are not repeatedly excavated after resurfacing. Officials said the PWD would take up the re-carpeting once the outstanding work by the three utility agencies is finished.
The directions were issued during a ‘Government on Wheels’ tour, under which officials from six departments travelled together to inspect civic problems and take decisions on site. The participating departments included the PWD, Delhi Jal Board, Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, district administrations and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The inspection began at Panchkuiyan Road and covered Rani Jhansi Road, Idgah Road, Rohtak Road, Zakhira, Karampura Flyover, Patel Road and Shadipur before concluding at Shankar Road. Shopkeepers, commuters and residents raised local concerns during the tour.
The PWD has been directed to repair damaged road patches and broken footpaths along Rani Jhansi Road and Idgah Road within 15 days. Beneath the Rani Jhansi Flyover, the PWD and MCD must install new lights, conduct a cleanliness drive and remove encroachments within a week.
Drainage work is also part of the instructions. The PWD will desilt drains and clear choked outlets on New Rohtak Road and in Zakhira to address waterlogging. At the Karampura Flyover, Patel Road and Shadipur, the PWD and DMRC have been asked to repair potholes, restore road markings and signage, and remove construction debris near metro structures.
The MCD has separately been instructed to clear roadside debris and improve sanitation on Shankar Road. The directions cover infrastructure managed by multiple agencies, placing coordination at the centre of the repair plan rather than treating individual road defects as isolated maintenance issues.
Singh said officials would revisit the locations to assess the work completed. An official said a review of Saturday’s directions would be held within a month. The ‘Government on Wheels’ initiative was launched last year and has previously covered areas in East Delhi, Outer and Rural Delhi, and South Delhi.
