NEW DELHI: The capital city of Delhi is currently in the throes of an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels and the heat index touching a staggering 49 degrees Celsius.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended its heatwave alert until May 29, cautioning residents to brace for scorching conditions expected to persist over the coming days. On Monday, the mercury climbed to alarming heights across Delhi, with the base station at Safdarjung recording a maximum temperature of 45.1 degrees Celsius, a significant deviation from the seasonal norm. Areas like Mungeshpur in north Delhi experienced even more extreme conditions, with temperatures peaking at 48.8 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest spot in the city. Other regions, including Najafgarh, Narela, and Pitampura, recorded temperatures above 48 degrees Celsius, all falling under the heatwave zone designation.
The relentless heat has prompted health authorities to issue warnings, especially for vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses. The IMD has advised residents to take precautionary measures to prevent heat-related illnesses, including staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun. Despite the sweltering conditions, there is a glimmer of hope for relief towards May 30, with the IMD forecasting a slight drop in temperatures due to anticipated cloud cover and moist winds. However, until then, residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard their health amidst the oppressive heat.
In addition to the heatwave, Delhi is also grappling with deteriorating air quality, further exacerbating the challenges faced by its residents. The Air Quality Index (AQI) registered a reading of 223, signalling poor air quality conditions compared to moderate readings observed earlier. As the city battles the dual challenges of extreme heat and poor air quality, concerted efforts from both authorities and residents are crucial to mitigating the adverse effects and ensuring the well-being of all citizens during this challenging period.
