A 23-year-old candidate died after collapsing during a Physical Endurance and Measurement Test (PEMT) race at the Delhi Police Academy in Wazirabad on Monday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Saurabh Kumar, son of Lachhi Singh and a resident of Neta Nagar in Salamatpur village of Uttar Pradesh’s Anupshahr. He was appearing for the ongoing recruitment test at the academy when he suddenly collapsed on the track during the race.
According to police, Sonia Vihar police station received information at around 11.11 am from Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital. Kumar had been brought to the hospital’s emergency department by a PCR van from the Delhi Police Academy, Wazirabad. Doctors declared him brought dead, police said.
Police said Kumar was provided initial medical assistance after collapsing and was then shifted to the hospital by PCR staff. The circumstances surrounding the collapse and the exact cause of death have not yet been established.
Kumar’s body has been sent to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The examination is expected to help determine the exact cause of death, police said.
Proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita have been initiated at Sonia Vihar police station. The case remains subject to the post-mortem findings and the ongoing police proceedings.
